Some of you may already know Tactics Ogre and are eager to find out what’s new in this edition of the game. But first, let’s start with a little history lesson for those of you who are not familiar with this true classic…

A brief history of Tactics Ogre

The Ogre Battle series, of which Tactics Ogre is a part, began in 1993.

The first game in the series, Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen, was released in Japan for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System that same year. It was released for North American players in 1995. Its unique combination of real-time strategy and role-playing was a real treat for gamers and a hit.

In 1995, Tactics Ogre: Let’s All Stick Together was released in Japan for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was later ported to the PlayStation and released in North America in 1998. The game took a different approach from March of the Black Queen, offering a new isometric perspective, turn-based combat, highly detailed pixel art, and a complex branching story with multiple endings.

The game was truly one of luck; the combination of elements was well received by players and spawned a fanbase that continues to this day.

In 2010, a team including many of the original Tactics Ogre developers created a remake for the PlayStation Portable. It was released in Japan as Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fate, and a year later in the US and Europe under its original name, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

The sequel offered a vastly improved story, a world populated with even more colorful characters, an updated game with new systems, and plenty of content to satisfy even the most dedicated gamer. The game was a huge success and received positive reviews from both the media and players.

This brings us to Tactics Ogre: Reborn in 2022. This new version of the game is based on the 2010 remake, but with significant changes that make an already great game even better.

Story and characters

We’ve talked a lot about this news, but those of you who don’t know the game might be wondering, “What is this all about?” Here’s the basic plot:

The game is set in the Valeria Islands, the jewel of the Obero Sea. The islands have long been a center of maritime trade, and their inhabitants have fought for control of the coast throughout history.

Finally, a man rose up to put an end to this conflict: Dolgarua Oberis – but he will go down in history as the “King of the Dynasty.” King Dolgarua worked to eradicate the hatred of the islanders, and Valeria prospered for half a century.

But after the king’s death, civil war broke out again, with three factions vying for dominance: the Gargastani, who made up the majority of the island’s population; and the Wallisters, who had fewer members.

The islands were soon divided between the Bakram and Gargastani tribes, and an uneasy peace spread across the land. But no one believes that this tranquility will last…

What follows is an epic war tale in which many memorable characters become embroiled in the escalating conflict. Let’s get to know a few:

Denam is the main hero of this tale.

His father, Abna Planset, was kidnapped by the Dark Knights during a raid on his hometown of Golyat. Denham then joins the Warrister Resistance, fighting against the Bakram and Galgastani tribes with the help of his sister Catiur and his childhood friend Weiss.

Denham has a strong sense of justice, and it takes strength of iron to bring about the changes he envisions. A thoughtful young man, he questions the meaning of their battles.

Catiua Pavel

  • Voice actor: Victoria Atkin

Catiur is the younger sister of Denham and a Wollister. She and Denham lost their mother at a young age and were raised by their father, Abna Planset. Catiur now feels an excessive amount of affection for her brother.

Thanks to her father’s teachings, she is well on her way to becoming an Oracle, and will use her abilities to fight alongside Denham and her childhood friend, Weiss. However, her reason for joining their battles is more out of fear of losing her brother than her principles.

Vyce Bozeck

  • Walister, 18 years old
  • Voice Actor: Jason Spisak

The Dark Knights killed Weiss’s father, the only family he had left, leaving him an orphan. He could not stand the oppression of the Wallisters and willingly joined the fight against their tormentors.

He and Denham are dynamic and complement each other well.

Dorgalua Oberyth Valeria

  • Bakram, 65 years old at the time of his death

Dolgarua used his unparalleled intellect and charm to unite the conflicting territories of Valeria into one kingdom.

After the islands were united, he began implementing policies of racial reconciliation and the people praised his wisdom. However, after his death, there was no clear heir to the throne and Valeria once again fell into civil war.

In recognition of his great achievements, he is often referred to as the Dynastic King.

Juda Ronwey

Judah is the former lord of Armorica Castle. When Valeria fell into civil war, with fewer than one Woctarian in ten, Duke Ronway led them in the resistance against the Galgastani.

He fought bravely for half a year and was finally defeated. Now he is held prisoner.

Brantyn Morne

  • Bakram, 49 years old

Brantin is the ruler of the Kingdom of Bakram Valerian.

When King Dolgarua died, Brantin quickly rose from the clergy to become regent of the Kingdom of Valeria – such was his thirst for power. The motive for this sudden insult to the royal family is unclear, as Dolgarua had boundless trust in him.

Lanselot Tartaros

Captain of the Dark Knights of Lothlórien, originally from the mighty Holy Rodisian Empire, on the northern continent of the Valerian Islands. The Dark Knights answer directly to High Priest Sardian, ruler of the Holy Rodisian Empire, and thus Lancelot is referred to as the High Priest’s right hand according to many rumors.

The Dark Knight came to Valeria as part of a secret agreement with Regent Brantin, leader of Bakram.

Leundar Balbatos

  • Galgastani, 43 years old

Leundal is the leader of the Kingdom of Galgastan. In order to secure the southern half of Valeria, he waged a bloody war to annihilate House Wollystar.

Faced with this barbarism, many of his own people tried to rebel, but Barbatos turned his forces against them as well, making it clear that he would rule Galgastan with an iron fist.
