Genshin Impact is a massive game that places players in a world where the Archons rule the land and elemental visions are granted to worthy mortals. The game tells the story of a Traveler who, together with his companion Paimon, embarks on a search for his missing brother. Given the power to access the elements without the ability to see, Traveler breaks all the laws of Teyvat and achieves a nearly impossible feat.
To find his brother, they must travel through all seven regions and learn hidden truths about the world. During their journey, Traveler and Paimon discover numerous secrets that define the laws of Teyvat, and the history of the Archon War slowly becomes clear to them.
Updated on January 8, 2023 by Sanyam Jain: As the main story continues in the fourth region called Sumeru, the developers create another masterpiece with amazing lore and beautiful cutscenes. After all, Scaramouche finally gets the closure he’s deserved since the Traveler first met him.
Before Traveler Meets Paimon – Genshin Manga
The story begins with the official Genshin manga on the website. This story is not required for your experience in Teyvat, but it will resonate better if you know what happened before the game begins.
The starting region is introduced in the manga along with famous characters and Fatui. It shows Venti and Vanessa liberating Mondstadt from oppression and founding the Favonius Knights.
And several years before the game’s story begins, the Fatui arrived in Mondstadt with Corey, a girl full of Deev energy. Around the same time, Dottore, the number two of the Fatui Harbinger, visits Mondstadt and attracts the attention of Dirk and Kaeya.
Over the course of the manga, we see Korey’s character grow as we learn that Dottore’s presence is no coincidence, as Korey was his test subject. His attempts to get her back are largely thwarted by the people of Mondstadt, where Dirk is also seen harboring delusions.
Amber manages to save Korey from Krupp, another Fatui member who tried to harvest Korey’s powers. Finally, Saino appears and decides to take Korey to Sumeru.
Mondstadt Story Arc
The Traveler’s journey begins with a cut scene where Aether and Lumine are called to the rescue by an unknown goddess who calls herself the guardian of the Heavenly Principles. If you avoid her attacks and choose one of the twins, she manages to snatch the other from you.
The scene then switches to Paimon, who tells you how you fished her out and saved her life, and the two set off to find answers in the free city of Mondstadt. Along the way, you witness a giant dragon being chased and tamed by the Green Bard.
The Traveler makes a hushed noise, disturbing the peace, and the two characters leave. At this point you will receive the Corrupted Dragon’s Tear and meet Amber, an Outrider of Mondstadt. After making sure you’re not causing any trouble, she will escort you to the town where you will get a Wind Glider.
At this point a dragon will start attacking Mondstadt. Venti, the bard we saw earlier, will help you temporarily scare the dragon away. If you can avert this crisis, you will be recognized by Kaeya, Jean and Lissa of the Order of Favonius. You will also learn that the dragon Dvalin was one of the guardians of Mondstadt.
After several attempts, you remove the corrupted parts of Dvalin and save Mondstadt with the help of the Holy Lyra you stole from the Church of Barbatos. During this time, you learn that the Abyss is the cause of his fall and that it is led by none other than your twin.
Venti is then attacked in front of the church and his Gnosis is stolen by La Signora, Fatui Harbinger number 8 and the first Harbinger to appear in the game, they also learn that Venti Barbatos, Archon of Anemo, has a human form.
Liyue Story Arc
After speaking with Venti, Traveler and Paimon travel to Liyue to speak with Rex Lapis, Lord of Geo. On the way to Liyue, they attend an Advent ceremony hosted by Ning Guang, where the God of Geo is presumably murdered.
As newcomers to town, Traveler and Paimon are immediately suspected of involvement in the crime and are forced to flee the scene. As they flee, they are cornered by Mirelis, but Child appears and saves the day.
He sends Traveler to Juyun Karst to speak with the Adepti and clear her name. In Jueyun Karst, you will meet Moon Carver, Xiao, Cloud Retainer and Mountain Shaper and must gain their trust to prove your innocence.
Then you return to Liyue, where the Child introduces the two of you to Zhongli and begins to help you complete the farewell ceremony. Meanwhile, you are invited by Ganyu to meet with Ningguang and begin to collect evidence of the Fatui’s involvement in Rex Lapis’ death.
However, this is interrupted when a war between the Adepti and the Mirelis threatens to break out, and the Traveler must rush to the Golden House to stop the Child from stealing the Geo Gnosis from Rex Lapis’ body. In this realm, you learn that the Child is the eleventh Fatui Harbinger and that the Gnosis is not attached to his body.
After a fierce battle, the Child summons Osial, the Whirlpool King, using a seal prepared by the Fatui. With the help of the Adepti, Qi Xing, and the Traveler, the Old God is defeated. Soon after, they learn that Zhongli is a Geo-Archon and imparts his Gnosis to La Signora for free.
The Child is left in the dark, with Zhongli faking his death so that he is no longer the regent of the region. With another Gnosis taken from the Fatui, balance is struck in Liyue, and the Adepti entrust the care of the state to Qixing.
In the final act of the Liyue chapter, the Traveler finds out what the Abyss is up to and journeys with Dainsleif to unravel the mystery behind the Seven Upside-Down Statues. The Traveler is introduced to the Abyss’s messengers and his suspicions that the Twins are the leaders of the Abyss are confirmed.
At the end, there is an emotional cutscene where Gemini tells him that to understand what he is doing, he must learn the secrets of this world for himself. He then leaves you through the vortex and Dainsleif follows them.
Inazuma Story Arc
The traveler takes part in a contest to win an inactive vision, introducing Kaedehara to Kazuha. After spotting the thief who tried to steal the vision, he approaches Kazuha, who tells him a bit more about Inazuma’s current state.
Upon entering Inazuma, they are denied entry to the country of Ritou due to lack of special permission. They also met Touma, who seems to be the town’s trade master, who always knows exactly what is going on. Finally, Hiiragi Chisato helps them get through Ritou for the exchange.
Once you’re done, Touma will take you to Kamisato Ayaka, who is deeply concerned about the Vision Hunt Order. After gaining your trust, she will give you three wishes before carrying out her plan. They set out on a journey to comfort those who have lost their sight and are lost.
You will also be introduced to Yoimiya, who will help you break into the prison to save someone. As fate would have it, Touma is taken into custody by the police after General Raiden tries to take his sight, and the traveler becomes embroiled in a battle with the Archon.
After narrowly escaping death with the help of Thomas, she travels to Watatsumi Island, where she learns about the Resistance and meets Kokomi and Goro. Teppei acts as her guide and introduces everyone, but she soon receives a delusion spell from Fatui and begins to show signs of rapid aging.
After witnessing Teppei’s apparent last breath, the traveler and Paimon find the Delusion Factory and head there, where they meet and are nearly killed by Scaramouche. Luckily, Yae Miko saves the situation and takes her to the shrine.
She tells them that she is a puppet of Electro-Archon Aye, created by Shogun Raiden to achieve eternity. She trains you to defeat the Ei in the Empire and convinces Sara, the Shogun’s general, to cooperate. The Traveler makes his way to General Raiden’s palace, where he meets La Signora and ends up fighting for the throne.
Signora turns out to be the Crimson Witch of Embers, but loses the battle and Shogun Raiden kills her. The Traveler then leaves the palace and slowly makes his way to the exit, only to be attacked by Shogun Raiden moments later.
Kazuha becomes the first mortal to use the power of two visions at the same time, saving the Traveler’s life. The traveler is taken to Euthymia in Ray, where he fights with Yae Miko until she appears and asks the traveler to consider the ambitions of all those who have been deprived of their sight.
This gives the Traveler enough power to defeat the Archon, and she realizes her mistake. She stops the Vision Hunting Order and accepts the fact that she will not be able to obtain her version of eternity. After the Lightning Crisis is averted, the Traveler speaks with Yaemiko and finds out that she just gave Scaramouche a vision of Ray to save her.
She also reveals that Scaramouche is another one of Ray’s puppets who went rogue. She also gives us some details from Sumeru, where Lesser Lord Kusanari is the current regent since the Great King Rukadevata met his end.
At the end of Inazuma’s Tale, the traveler is once again entangled in his own past as he uncovers the deeds of the Abyss. It is revealed that the people of Kaenria were cursed by the Archons and were tormented until their end.
It is also revealed that Dainsleif is the leader of the country’s Royal Guard. Kaenria is the only country without an Archon, having been destroyed during the Archon War.
Sumeru Story Arc
Sumeru’s story is a rough journey from the beginning. Once in the region, he meets a researcher named Hypatia. After smelling the scent of incense, the traveler falls asleep and is connected directly to the tree, where he hears the words “World…forget me…”.
After hanging out with Tignari for a while and clearing the Wither Zone, he tells you that Iruminsul is the World Tree that contains all wisdom, and that it was recently corrupted. This corruption is the cause of the appearance of the Wilt Zone and illnesses such as Eleazar, which Koray suffers from.
Afterwards, you go to Sumer City to meet with the minor lord Kusanari. Soon after, you go to Port Olmos to meet Dori and get the sacred capsule that can help you. When Al-Haytham gets this capsule, they witness the effect of this capsule on the hermit.
The next day, spend a wonderful time with Danyarzad at the Sabzerz Festival. At the end, the Great Sage of the Academy stops Nilu from dancing the Sabzerz dance by saying, “Go and celebrate the birth of this god to your heart’s content.”
The traveler immediately knows the meaning of this line, for we find ourselves trapped on the same day of the Sabzerz Festival in some kind of recurring dream. After several attempts to stop the reincarnation, with the help of Nahida, aka the minor lord Kusanari, you ask Nilu to dance and finally succeed.
Soon after the end of Samsara, you set out to find out more about the Academia’s plans, trying to get Setaria on your side. Setaria is the personal assistant of the Great Sage, but is one of the few in the Academia who is from the desert.
You manage to change her mind, but all your plans are thwarted by the infamous Dottore. It turns out he is in control of the Academia and Akasha, and Nahida is trying to protect the Sumerian people while you are on the run.
The traveler attempts to find Tignari to find out more about the Academy, but upon meeting him in Pardis Diyai, a totally different scenario unfolds. Hypatia appears to be in communication with the divine gaze, but the god controlling her mind is Scaramouche himself. At this point, you are ambushed by Academy soldiers and Catherine is stabbed shortly after Nahida briefly exchanges her consciousness with yours.
During this time, they see Nahida locked in Dendro’s cage while Scaramouche prepares something below. The traveler connects the dots and realizes that the Akademiya are trying to create their own god because they simply did not believe in the rule of the lesser lord Ksanari.
Nahida also asks to go to the desert to find answers that will help them understand it all. They join forces with Al-Haytham, Saino, Candice and Dehya to solve the mystery of the missing guardian of Aar village.
The journey takes them to an abandoned hospital before heading to the Mausoleum of King Deshret to exchange Al-Haytham for the Protector. The deal fails and you are sucked into the realm from the ruins of the king. At the end of this realm the most shocking truth is revealed.
It turns out that King Deshret was unable to control his power and was the cause of Iruminsur’s corruption. Meanwhile, the great king Rukadevata did all he could to remove Iruminsur and its negative influence on the people of Sumer. In the process, she loses much of her power and turns into the form of a child.
At this point, you connect the dots and find out that Lesser King Kusanari is none other than Rukadevata himself. The god the Academy had long denied was the god they had always loved. The Traveler seeks justice and resolves to thwart Fatui’s nefarious plans.
The next day, the Traveler, Al-Haytham, Saino, and Dehya hatch an intricate plan to defeat Fatui and save Nahida in the process. The details of these plans are not revealed to the player, but Candace tells everyone that no matter how daring the plan may be, safety comes first.
The Traveler meets up with Al-Haytham and returns to the Hermit Camp as Dehya leaves to run some errands. After speaking with some other researchers, Al-Haytham asks him to record a message in one of the Knowledge Capsules about using his beliefs to save Nahida. After recording, Al-Haytham says that he intends to use it on the Akashic Terminal, as the people of Sumer believe everything that is written in it.
The Traveler then heads to the Ribat Caravan to convince Saino to go ahead with their plan. Here, they put on a show of helping the Ribat guards capture Rahman, clearing the way for their Hermit friends to enter the city of Sumer. Dehya then says that Tignari will tell you where the Doctor is currently.
To your surprise, Tignari will tell you that Dottore has come to pick you up and is trying to take Hypatia away. When Tignari refuses, the Harbinger leaves the area and heads for the harbour. You follow him to a boat, where the Doctor is surprised as he already knew you were there. The traveller realises that the whole thing was a ruse and that Hypatia and Tignari are in danger.
After ensuring Hypatia’s safety, the traveler comes face to face with Scaramouche’s shadow. The Sixth Harbinger states that he has taken over Hypatia’s consciousness and knows all about her plans. We also learn more about Scaramouche and everything inside his head.
After this scene of pure horror, meet everyone at the Grand Bazaar, where Nilu will join you. This is where the trouble begins, as you and Al-Haytham head to the lion’s den, the Academy itself. However, not everything will go according to plan. The Great Sage Azar will see you coming and confront the Traveler and Al-Haytham.
The next part will be hard to watch as Al-Haytham devours the Divine Knowledge Capsule and charges towards Azar. But his attack fails and the plan fails… or will it? At the end of the cutscene, Al-Haytham can be seen smiling reassuringly at Nilu while the Traveler and Paimon are imprisoned.
Now begins the most difficult part of this plan. The Traveler will be tasked with awakening Nahida’s consciousness. When you step into the darkness and find her consciousness, you will find out about the truly heartbreaking past that Nahida went through and you will even hear Lukkadevata talk about how well she did.
Things turn around as you are able to do things you have never done before in the game. While everyone can play other characters in Genshin Impact, the main plot still revolves around the player being a traveler. However, in this quest, you can control another person in Teyvat, namely Nilou.
While she was performing in front of the Academy, the Great Sage ordered another Sage to issue a new Akasic rule that forbids her from appearing in public. Here, the message displayed in the Akashic “The Lesser King Ksanari has fled the Sanctuary of Surasthana. Go into the city and arrest her immediately…” is changed.
It turns out that Al-Haytham did not fail after all, as his plan was to switch one of the knowledge capsules on Azar’s table and not actually attack him. The soldiers pass right by Niru to capture Nahida. A big moment arrives for Isaac, as the player makes the right decision regarding the boy and lures the Akademiya soldiers to the Grand Bazaar, where Dehya and Rahman must take care of them.
Learning what has happened, Azar rushes to the sanctuary, only to encounter Saino and Nahida there. It is time for the Great Sage to get what he deserves and for Nahida to be freed from captivity. When all goes wrong, Dehya is captured and saves the traveler so he can meet Nahida.
Finally, it is time to adventure with Nahida herself. She guides you through a realm full of Fatui who had been held captive in an attempt to make Scaramouche a god. Once they activate the elevator and reach the required level, they discover that Scaramouche is already a “true” god, even if they don’t have the knowledge capsule yet.
Nahida borrows the wisdom of the entire Sumeru to defeat the boss. While defeating Scaramouche, Nahida gains Electronosis and uses it to awaken the last memory of the great Lord Rukadevata. In the last memory, the traveler and Nahida finally meet Rukadevata, who reveals that she is the only god who did not go to the Kaenrya cataclysm.
She had to stay behind and stop the contamination of the forbidden knowledge. Eventually she realises that the corruption of forbidden knowledge has entered her consciousness through Iruminsul and the only way out is to cut off the purest branch from herself. Nahida is the purest branch and she must eliminate Rukadevata from Iruminsul to save him.
After witnessing the heartbreaking scene, you will realise that the words that began Sumeru’s story (World…forget me…) were part of a sentence in Rukadevata that reads: “Forget me, O world…forget me.” Returning to the real world, you will realise that everyone has forgotten Rukadevata except the traveller.
Just as the traveller learns something new about her, a noise renders her and Paimon unconscious and Dottore enters the scene. When the second messenger tries to blackmail Nahida into taking Gnosis, she threatens him by saying that she will destroy Gnosis and awaken the celestial principle.
Nahida instead negotiates with him and has him delete all other versions in exchange for Electronosis. She also gets vital intel from Harbinger in exchange for Dendrognosis after Harbinger reveals that the sky of Teyvat is fake.
Finally, tell Nahida about Scaramouche’s location and the information about his brother in Irminsul. At this point she mentions that the traveler is one of the four “Descendants” of Teyvat – otherworldly people from the heavens. With this info dump, the final act of the Sumerus arc ends.
Interlude Chapter – Scaramouche’s Conclusion
Although Sumeru’s arc is over, the Travelers did not know what happened to Scaramouche, and they had come too far to simply let him go. In her next journey, she returns to Nahida, where she learns that she wants to use the power of the Harbinger. Strictly speaking, he is no longer a Harbinger, as Dottore refuses to accept the loser.
Together with Scaramouche, you venture deep into the heart of Irminsul to find information about the twins, but the God of Wisdom has other plans. She shows Scaramouche what really happened in Inazuma all those years ago, and how he was betrayed by the Doctor, not by his friend Niwa. At that time, Dottore killed Niwa and used his mind to lie to Baladia, making him think that he had been betrayed.
Upon learning this, Wanderer decided to withdraw from Iruminsul, just like Lukkadevata had done, thinking that this would give Niwa a second chance at life. However, that did not happen at all. All the past events remained, but the roles of the characters involved in them were swapped.
After a while, the traveler remembers that Lukkadevata had said that one cannot truly withdraw from Iruminsul. There, they meet Wanderer, a new incarnation of Scaramouche. For the rest of the search, Naheedah and the Traveler retrace Wanderer’s past as he regains his memories.
Now the world has forgotten Scaramouche/the Balladia/the Country Breaker/the Kabuki-monger. Wanderer has regained all his memories, but intends to help Naheedah and the Traveler in the future. This is the first time that one of the Fatui Harbinger has sided with the Traveler.
Caribert
Charibert is a Traveler chapter set in Sumer. There were already some lore bombs right from the start. We learn that Kaeya’s last name is Alberich, and Dainsleaf mentions that this is the last name of the founder of the Abyss Cult. However, Kaeya assures the Traveler that he no longer has any ties to the past.
Dainsleaf also mentions that he wants to explore the nearby regions to find a connection to the Loom of Fate mentioned in Mondstadt. Upon arriving in this area, they are separated from Paimon and Dainsleaf, but also meet a stranger who is taking care of a hilichur in his house. They learn that the stranger was once a Caenryan.
In addition to the pure-blooded Caenryan, there were also people from other countries in Caenryan who stopped believing in God. The pure-blooded people were given a curse of immortality, and the other countries were given a curse of wildness, turning them into these hilichur. Kalibert was one such person, the illegitimate child of the stranger before you.
The traveler then helps the stranger Eide make a potion that will enlighten Kalibert. He knew he had no power to break the god’s curse, but he just wanted to awaken his son. This forced him to bow to the statue of the Seven, but the potion had no effect.
However, as he is preparing the second dose, Kalibert disappears and they see a broken mirror. Eide then says that Kalibert saw this reflection and broke the mirror, but you had already seen the mirror broken when you first came to this region with Dainsleaf. So the two decide to search for Kalibert.
Upon finding Hilichur, they see him remove his mask as the power of the Abyss envelops him. The Traveler then loses consciousness and wakes up while Eide rejoices. He reveals his true identity as… Chlothar Alberich. After a short discussion, he calls you Prince of Caenria. The traveler is shocked and looks into the broken mirror, where he actually sees his brother.
Upon awakening, you learn from Dainthleaf that Chlothar is the name of the founder of the Abyss Cult. You then ask Dain for help in digging the ground and seeing what is buried there. You find the skeletons of a man and a woman, with the woman buried much earlier than the man. This leads to only one conclusion that shocks everyone:
Clothar manages to find a way to free himself from the curse and rest next to his wife. With all this new information, Dainsleaf decides to part ways with the Traveler again, and the search comes to an end.
