Wolfenstein: Youngblood is just around the corner, and there’s no better time than now to look back at the story of BJ Blazkowicz and find out how Terror Billy earned his nickname and reputation as a vicious Nazi killer, and how we got there and where we are now. Today.
Here’s a plot breakdown of Machine Games’ two main Wolfenstein games, The New Order and The New Colossus.
An Alternate Reality World War 2
The year is 1946, World War II is in full swing, and the tide is turning in the Nazis’ favor thanks to their sudden and dramatic technological advances. We’re talking near-impenetrable metal killing machines, robot dogs, death lasers, and all sorts of other nasty forms.
Nazi professional butcher Captain William Joseph Blazkowicz and his troops raid a Nazi compound, but the mission goes awry and BJ has to watch as Nazi scientist Death’s Head murders his chosen friend. BJ then escapes and blows up the castle, but receives shrapnel in his head as a parting gift and goes into a coma.
After a 14-year nap, BJ wakes up in an asylum in Poland. He is looked after by a nurse called Anya, who will become his future wife and a very capable person, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The Nazis show up to do Nazi things. Blasko struggles to escape, discovers how the Nazis took over the world while he was asleep, and decides to form a resistance movement.
Blasco and Anya hitchhike on a train to Berlin, where we first meet the totally insane Mr. Engel.
Anyway, Blasco and Anya have sex on the train, infiltrate the prison, save their friend who didn’t die, I think it was Fergus, because Fergus is, well, definitely cooler than Wyatt, and they do it and they head off to the headquarters of the resistance in Berlin.
The Da’at Yichud
The resistance fighters learn about Daat Echud, an ancient Jewish mystical group whose technology was centuries ahead of its time. One of their members, Set Roth, is held captive in a labor camp, but Blasko frees him. In the process, Mr. Engel’s face is crushed, making him even more terrifying.
Set explains that the Nazis’ discovery of Daat Echud’s hideout allowed them to build a superweapon and ultimately win the war against the Allies. But that wasn’t all.
So the resistance fighters steal a submarine, go to their hideout at the bottom of the Atlantic, find a cool new toy, and head to the moon, yes, the moon, to get the codes to steal a nuclear weapon. But as soon as Blasco returns, Engel attacks the Resistance HQ. Rest in peace, Thekla and Klaus.
This is where the climax of The New Order begins: the Resistance launches an attack on Death’s Head compound, and you fight Death’s giant robot using your friend’s brain from the beginning of the game, because he’s an evil Nazi scientist.
After the final battle, Death’s Head tries another trick by blowing himself up with a grenade to take BJ down with him. BJ survives, the mansion is destroyed by a bomb, and BJ naps again in a coma.
The New Colossus
Now we move on to the story of The New Colossus. BJ sleeps for five months while resistance fighters hide in a stolen submarine. He conveniently wakes up when the Nazis attack the submarine, but is captured and once again forced to witness a psychopath murder one of his friends. Rest in peace, Caroline.
BJ and the crew escape thanks to Mr. Engel’s daughter Sigrun, who was tired of her mother’s abuse, and together they head to America to look for more members.
This leads them to New York, where they find and scout the couple Grace Walker and Norman “Super Spesh” Caldwell. Grace is a survivor of the atomic bomb dropped on the US while BJ was in a coma, and is the leader of the American Resistance. Mr. Spesh is a former lawyer and conspiracy theorist who is very enthusiastic about the idea of a working toilet.
After a short mission to Roswell, BJ is captured when his racist father betrays him to the Nazis during a family visit. The father gets his just comeuppance, but things take a turn for the worst for the Resistance when Spesh dies trying to break BJ out of prison… So BJ gets his head chopped off.
The Resistance Gains the Upper Hand
But all is well, because they stick BJ’s head Frankenstein-style onto a super soldier’s body, put the head on his new shoulders, disguise themselves as an actor, and fly off into space to meet the Führer on Venus. And then reprise the role in a propaganda film. Let me just say, it’s a very convincing portrayal.
While there, Brasco manages to steal the codes to Odin, the automated defense system that protects Nazi strongholds. Sigrun breaks the code and finds a way to shut it down, setting up a grand finale in which resistance fighters launch an attack on a huge, fortified Nazi airbase, taking over Odin’s command system, and ending in time for Mrs. Engel to appear on The Jimmy Carver Show, splitting her head in half with an axe on national television.
And the story ends here. With Engel gone, the resistance is stronger than ever and the message to rise up has been sent to the whole world. This brings us up to speed in time for Youngblood, with Wolfenstein set 20 years after the events of The New Colossus and starring BJ and Anya’s twin daughters, Jessica and Sofia.
